Tiger Woods Goes Back to the Future

The first week of December is an odd time for there to be any truly compelling golf news. It really doesn’t matter what time of year it is because when Tiger Woods tees it up it is always big news.

For the first time in four months Tiger will tee it up as he plays host at his Hero World Challenge at Isleworth Country Club.  tiger como

Seventeen other golfers will welcome Woods back tomorrow but the world will be watching Woods as he brings a “new” swing to the course.

Tiger said his new coach, Chris Como had an idea of what Tiger’s swing should look like and Tiger agreed. It should look more like the Tiger of the mid 90’s and Woods has done his best to go back to his old “Butch Harmon” swing.

“It is new, but it’s old because I haven’t done it in a very long time,” Woods said. “We looked at a lot of video from when I was a junior, and amateur golf, way before even when I came out there and had some really nice years where I hit the ball really well. We went back to some of those old videos and really looked at it.”

Of course neither Woods nor Como ever mentioned Harmon’s name but most of the swing experts were certainly comparing it to the swing Tiger and Harmon crafted during his heyday.

It will be interesting to see if Woods can actually go retro and put the “old” swing into practice. He’ll have some stiff competition this week as the Hero World Challenge has a pretty hefty lineup.

Jordan Spieth fresh off his Aussie Open win is paired with his Ryder Cup buddy and latest cult hero, Patrick Reed .

Bubba Watson and his best bud, Rickie Fowler is sure to draw some of the biggest crowds.

Tiger is paired with Jason Day for rounds one and two. Much like Tiger’s list of Jack Nicklaus’ records that he had on his bedroom wall as a child, Day used a book by Tiger Woods as his inspiration to play the game.
