10 Things I Think, Super Bowl Sunday Style

Disclaimer: This past weekend we were all treated to some very exciting and historic golf but on Super Bowl weekend everything gets overshadowed by the biggest game of the year. The Super Bowl eclipses everything in its path especially when we witness the stupidest play call in the history of the game. You run Marshawn Lynch from the one yard line! It’s simple…run the most powerful back in the league and then run him again if you need to. Pass the ball on fourth down if you need to. And don’t make excuses. Pete Carroll blew it. That one call cost them the game.  interception

That being said, here are my thoughts on a great golf weekend.

1.  Forget Tiger Woods and his yips, the golf story of the week is young Lydia Ko climbing to the top spot in the world rankings. She broke Tiger’s record as the youngest number one ever at 17 years old. And if you listen to her fellow LPGA players they all said it was just a matter of time.

2.  Just as impressive as Ko’s exquisite golf game is the poise, grace and modesty she displays each week. She easily could have bemoaned her failure at the Coates Championship or on the other hand, been a giddy teenager for earning number one. But Lydia was Lydia: a quiet, composed young woman who recognized both with a zen like peacefulness not normally seen in a teenager.

3.  Throwing the ball from the one yard line is the worst call in Super Bowl history.

4.  While Tiger and Phil spent Sunday eating chips and watching the pregame, the male number one and best golfer in the world was busy working. Rory McIlroy played a steady round and cruised to victory at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Rory is continuing his hot streak, he hasn’t lost any steam from that late season triple of Open Championship, WGC and PGA last season. Augusta is in his sights.

5.  Maybe Brooks Koepka can give Lydia Ko a run for the “feel good story” of the weekend. Koepka has spent the last two years making like Gary Player flying all over the world to ply his trade and hone his game. We saw the result last year when he won in Turkey and it looks like all those miles have paid off. His eagle on 15 got him into a share of the lead and when others faltered around him he was left holding the Waste Management Open trophy as the fans headed home to catch the big game. Koepka has a big, long game and this was his second win in four starts. He’ll play both the PGA and Euro Tours this season. No rest for the gifted golfer.

6.  Throwing the ball from the one yard line with Marshawn Lynch in the backfield is the worst call in Super Bowl history.

7.  You may not realize it but Bruno Mars has made it to big time professional golf. Both The Golf Channel and CBS played Mars’ latest song Uptown Funk as they went to commercial. Who’d have thought those networks were so hip. By the way, I have no idea what it means but it’s a great tune.  rory dubai 15

8.  All right, the best thing to happen to Tiger Woods over the weekend was the shocking ending to the Super Bowl. It got all of us talking about how Seattle blew it and took the focus off Tiger’s case of the yips. He said he was heading home to practice instead of hanging around for the game. He doesn’t need to practice the yips, he has them down perfectly. A check up from the neck up is what he needs. It’s all in his head now.

9.  Throwing the ball from the one yard line with Marshawn Lynch in the backfield and a timeout in your pocket is the worst call in Super Bowl history.

10.  Phil Mickelson was another one who made a much too early exit from Phoenix. Phil was disappointed that he couldn’t compete for his fourth title at his college hometown. But his putter has deserted him again. After missing another slew of short putts I saw Phil holding his putter up to his eyes and looking down the shaft. He was checking to see if his flat stick had been bent out of alignment. That’s never a good sign.

Extra Point.  Paul Azinger, who never minces words, says Tiger’s chipping woes could be fixed in “minutes.” If that’s the case, I think Tiger should give Zinger a quick call. He’s bottomed out and what could it hurt? But that won’t happen. It’s not in Tiger’s DNA.

2 Point Conversion.  Did I say that throwing the ball from the one yard line is the worst call in Super Bowl history?
