Rory Helicopters 3 Iron Into Lake

The past two tournaments on the PGA Tour have tested the best golfers in the world. Last week we watched shot after shot at The Honda Classic’s PGA National meet a watery end.

This week is no different at Trump National Doral. The best golfers in the world are feeling the bite of Gil Hanse’s redo of the Blue Monster. Throw in a little wind and it is all that, a monster and very, very blue. Blue as in the water that is collecting errant shots at an alarming rate.

World number one, Rory McIlroy was one of the many victims today as the Blue Monster gathered in one of Rory’s shots. But Rory wasn’t about to take that lying down. Immediately after he lost one to the lake at the par five eighth hole he flung his new Nike Vapor iron deep into the lake in frustration.

Oh well, this game can get to you sometimes. Was Rory wrong for losing control? Yes, but I’m not going to beat him up about it. But I will give him a very low score for style points. He pulled it at release, just like his shot. Follow through for a straight, solid release. Everyone from Tommy Bolt to John Daly knows that!
Anyway, Rory was apologetic afterwards and this is why we love this guy: he screws up, takes blame openly and realizes what a knucklehead he is.

“I mean, look, I just let frustration get the better of me. It was heat of the moment and if it had been any other club I probably wouldn’t have (thrown it), but I didn’t need a 3-iron for the rest of the round, so I thought why not?”

“Felt good at the time. It sure looked like it felt great. I felt better just watching it.”

“… Looking back at it, it isn’t one of my proudest moments. … I wouldn’t encourage anyone to do it; especially if there’s kids watching at home. First of all, it’s expensive, and second of all, you shouldn’t do it.”

I bet the boys in the Nike van had another 3 iron built before that one hit the water.
