10 Things I Think & More

1.  J.B Holmes’ 62 on Thursday was one amazing round of golf. The field averaged 73.4, over eleven shots greater than Holmes. Johnny Miller called it the best round on tour in the last twenty years. It was Holmes’ tournament to lose then, and he did.

2.  Holmes criticized the first hole at Doral after he said he hit two “perfect shots” and his ball rolled into the water. That’s called a “strategic hole” my friend and maybe Doral was paying him back for that 62.adam scott short putter

3.  It was good to see Adam Scott finally bend over to use a regulation putter instead of that monstrosity of a broomstick. Looks like Scotty may have gained a pound or two…fatherhood will do that to you.

4.  Scott’s putting numbers have to be encouraging: he finished twelfth in strokes gained putting and tenth in puts per greens in regulation.

5.  Rory McIlroy gets a free pass for tossing a club while the talking heads say that Tiger Woods would have been ripped for such behavior. That’s right. Rory is still a likable figure. Tiger isn’t…it’s that simple.

6.  The LPGA is off to another banner season. We had their top three players going at it in the final group in the final round. Inbee Park, Lydia Ko and Stacy Lewis all playing together with Park holding on for the win…you can’t script it any better.

7.  Was I the only fanatic watching the Golf Channel’s live stream of the LPGA in the wee hours of Sunday morning? Live golf with the top three players in the world is worth staying up for.

8.  The most under-appreciated golfer in the game, Stacy Lewis, pulled a bit of magic on Sunday. Her drive on the twelfth hole disappears into a palm tree. Luckily, it was only about eight feet tall and her caddie was able to climb up there and find the ball. After a drop and a poor pitch she still had 25 feet from off the green for par. She drains it and kept herself in the hunt. Typical Lewis.

9.  Justin Rose’s 2015 season: MC, MC, 55. What is going on?

10.  Phil Mickelson’s 2015 season: T24, MC, MC, T17, T31. Phil isn’t near the top in any significant statistical category on tour. He was never an accurate driver, he ranks 145th on tour but his short game was his savior. Not this year, he’s 122nd in scrambling and 124th in strokes gained putting. Right now there is no part of his game he can rely on.  dj paulina

11.  Props to Alex Cejka for winning in Puerto Rico for his first PGA Tour win. The 44 year took 287 starts before he was able to grab a victory. He earned his ’15 Tour card by going back to the Web.com Tour and finishing 18th on the money list. Now he gets a two year tour exemption. Good for him.

12.  Dustin Johnson has had the tools for a long time.  The knock on him was his focus and dedication.  Maybe his hiatus and recent fatherhood has changed that.  A motivated DJ has to scare the hell out of his PGA Tour buddies.

13.   Say what you will about Donald Trump, and we do, he puts on a good show and has learned to turn over the important stuff to the professionals. Gil Hanse has turned the Blue Monster into just that…a real monster. If those pros had to play that course every week they’d give up the game.
