Masters Flashback 2004: It Was Phil’s Time

It was a long time coming but that may have made it a bit sweeter. Phil Mickelson had struggled to win his first major for a long time. He had zero majors in 42 attempts. But that Easter Sunday in 2004 was Phil’s Day.

He started the day tied for the lead with Chris DiMarco at six under par. Phil made his charge on the back nine with five birdies in his last seven holes.

He capped it off with his 18 foot birdie putt on eighteen to finish at nine under par and beat Ernie Els by a shot. It was then that we were treated to his infamous jump for joy.

He had finally broken through at the majors and his Hall of Fame career had started in earnest.
