You’ll be hearing Lexi Thompson’s name a lot this weekend as she defends her title at the season’s first major, the ANA Inspiration. But even if Lexi isn’t able to defend and earn her second major championship I have a feeling she’ll be in the news a lot this week.
Take a look at the latest cover from Golf Digest. May’s issue is the annual fitness issue and Lexi is this year’s cover girl.
Lexi follows Holly Sonders and Paulina Gretsky as the featured model in the fitness issues but those two sparked plenty of controversy the last two years. The question was why Golf Digest wouldn’t select one of the playing professionals of the LPGA instead of golf “personalities.”

The answer was simple at the time: Sonders and Gretsky were at the peak of their popularity and they are sexy as hell. And who buys Golf Digest? Let’s just say they the folks at Conde Nast Publishing know their demographics.
Not that there won’t be any controversy this year. I am sure some will complain about the objectification of Lexi and her fellow players. But the LPGA players won’t be complaining about not being included in this issue.
There are many attractive and fit players on the tour and if they are going to publish a fitness issue the players should be included.
This is more evidence that golfers are athletes, contrary to many opinions.
Watch Lexi kick some ass. She’s hoping to do the same on the course this weekend.
