Jordan Spieth In Control at The Masters

MastersJordan Spieth continued his torrid play at The Masters today backing up his opening 64 with a sizzling 66. The young Texan set a new record for the lowest score after 36 holes, 14 under par. He broke Masters Champion Ray Floyd’s 13 under which he set in 1976.

Consider that Bubba Watson won last year’s Masters at -8, 2012’s at -10 and Adam Scott won in 2013 at -9. Spieth has already blown past the winning score of all but two tournaments in the last ten years (2011 -14, 2010-16).

That doesn’t bode well for the rest of the field.

How is a twenty one year old in only his second Masters smoking the field? Well Spieth is no normal twenty something. He’s mature beyond his years, filled with confidence from his recent run and has learned to control his emotions where they formerly would get the better of him.  spieth d2 masters 15

Today he lipped out a birdie putt that looked like it was dead center. He looked aggravated as he stood over the two footer with his legs spread to protect his partner’s line, the steam coming from his ears. But he took a deep breath, backed off marked his ball and gave himself a chance to calm down.

After his partners putted out he tapped it in for his par. Last year he may have just whacked the putt in and stormed off in a huff. Not this year.

But it takes more than an even temperament to win majors and he is doing everything one needs to win.

To shoot an opening 64 is one thing but to back that up with a 66 is rare indeed.

He has made one bogey in 36 holes. He has hit 78% of his greens and 71% of his fairways. Most importantly he has no three putts and leads the field in putting with 1.39 putts per greens in regulation.

You pair skills like that with his newfound ability to control his temper and you get a champion golfer. A golfer that’s on the verge of winning his first major.
