Monday Chip Shots

Lydia Ko just keeps adding to her legacy. That’s if it’s possible for an 18 year old to have a legacy. She celebrated her birthday over the weekend and promptly defends her title at the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic. And she didn’t have her best stuff. Morgan Pressel had the tournament in hand and a two shot lead until two late bogeys did her in. That’s part of the game and for Ko just hanging around earned her another LPGA win.  ko & pressel

This will be a tough one for Pressel. She hasn’t won an LPGA event since 2008 in Kapalua and is desperately trying to put her new-found length to use. She is so very popular among her LPGA members and a great leader for all things off the course. This one will sting for awhile.

Justin Rose has absolutely turned his game around. He had struggled going into The Masters but found his swing and finished T2. With a final round 66 at the Zurich Classic on Sunday he earned his seventh career PGA Tour win and extends his string of consecutive seasons with a win to six, second only to Dustin Johnson’s eight.

The Champions Tour was a bit of a treat for us this week as we got to see Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and a few more “legends” tee it up along with the regular members at the Legends of Golf. It never gets old watching the greatest of all time.

Johnny Morris, the host/owner/developer of the Big Cedar Lodge that hosted the Champions this week is really building something in his home state of Missouri. He started with a Nicklaus designed nine hole course, added an Arnold Palmer designed practice range, bought a nearby Tom Fazio design, signed Gary Player to build a family friendly course and this week announced that the big boys, Coore and Crenshaw will add another course to his menu. This guy is a Mike Kaiser Lite. And this is all on land he grew up on as a kid. It can’t get any better that that.

Unfortunately for all Phil Mickelson fans, Phil announced he will not be playing in this weeks’ WGC Cadillac Match Play. Phil the Thrill cited personal reasons for his withdrawal. Hopefully it isn’t anything serious and had nothing to do with Phil’s miserable record at the Match Play. He never got past the third round and hasn’t played in it since 2011.
