The Amazing Jordan Spieth Wins The John Deere Again

It was déjà vu all over again at The John Deere Classic. In 2013 Jordan Spieth won here in a playoff that catapulted him into a trajectory unseen since Tiger Woods.

Today Spieth, who struggled early, found a way to get it done and win in a playoff once again as he dispatched 47 year old journeymen Tom Gillis.

Gillis shot a sizzling 64 and had finished the day at twenty under par and then waited for the field to finish. When Spieth tied him they were paired in another playoff.  spieth deere putter

It was David versus Goliath. It was Tin Cup at the Open. It was Hogan versus Fleck. It was the 643rd player in the world against No.2. But there was no Hollywood ending here.

Gillis was on fire early in the round with three birdies to open and birds on six of his first eight holes. He sprinkled two bogeys and a few more birdies in his round of 64 and he even had it to twenty one under par but a late bogey on sixteen would prove costly for Gillis whose best PGA finish was a second at the 2012 Honda Classic.

As hot as Gillis started the day the third round leader was anything but hot. Spieth bogeyed the first and after a birdie on the second he carded another bogey. A spotty game had him one over for the day as he finished number twelve he was one over for the day.

Then things got interesting as the hottest player on the planet started to warm up.

Birdies at thirteen, fourteen, sixteen and seventeen had him at twenty under, tied for the lead and he had a thirty foot putt to win the tournament on the final hole.

But it was not to be, at least not then.

Gillis and Spieth went off to the playoff and both parred the eighteenth on their first try. But when Gillis’ approach from the rough rolled into the water on the second playoff hole Spieth finished out the win with a par for his second John Deere title and fifth overall PGA Tour win.

It is Spieth’s fourth win this season on the PGA Tour and he is in great form to continue his run at the calendar Grand Slam this week at The Open Championship.
