Ten Things I Think

Newly crowned PGA Tour winner Shane Lowry made some absolutely outrageous recoveries on Sunday at Firestone. His save at the tenth hole and his clinching birdie at eighteen would have to make anyone’s highlight reel.lowry smiling

Talk about the ultimate hangover. Troy Merritt broke through for his first win last week at The Quicken Loans and this week at the WGC he comes in dead last. An opening 82 doomed his chances but I don’t think he’s losing any sleep over it. And he still pockets over $40,000 for playing in this no-cut event.

Tough luck for Jim Furyk once again. The PGA Tour veteran and No.6 ranked player in the world cannot hold onto a 54 hole lead. He is zero for ten in his last ten tries to convert a third round lead into a victory. Jim’s one of the nicest guys on tour but this has to be driving him crazy.

Justin Rose can blame his new putter for his failure to close out the Bridgestone. While his driving and ball striking were superb his putter let him down. He was first in Strokes Gained Tee to Green, second in Greens In Regulation but a miserable 68th in Strokes Gained Putting. That won’t win many tournaments.

rory pgaRory McIlroy looks like he’s playing in this week’s PGA Championship and once again the rivalry chatter will start. I am just happy he’s healthy enough to compete but there’s got to be plenty of rust there. But if anyone can come come off rehab to compete it’s Rory and that magical driver of his.

Jeff Maggert is quietly having one hell of a season on the Champions Tour. He has already won twice this season at two majors, The Regions Tradition and the U.S. Senior Open and he won again yesterday at the Shaw’s Charity Classic. Langer, Monty and Freddy may get the press but Maggert is truly getting it done on the senior circuit.

Dustin Johnson continued his habit of blowing up on the weekend as he did at the Open Championship. He opened with rounds of 69-67 to be in contention but 75-76 on the weekend sent him to a T53 finish. That’s doesn’t bode well for his return to Whistling Straights.

Props to J.J. Henry for his win at the opposite field Barracuda Championship. It’s his third PGA Tour win and he beat Kyle Reifers on the second playoff hole. His winning total was +47…you have to love that Modified Stableford scoring.

Phil Mickelson showed little sign of finding his game this week at Firestone. He heads into the PGA off his last three wie blondefinishes of T64, T20 and T63. It was ten years ago that Phil captured the PGA at Baltusrol. He’ll need to snap out of his funk if he expects to win another.

Michele Wie is at it again. While the Big Wiesy rehabs her ailing hip and foot she decided to lighten things up a bit, on her head. She’s now a blond and it seems fitting because she is definitely having more fun.
