Remember When: Michelle Wie Plays in the Sony Open

Week two of the ’16 PGA Tour season stays in paradise this week at The Sony Open played over the Waialae Country Club on Oahu.michelle wie sony 04 swing

Spending a few evenings watching golf from Hawaii makes me anxious to get back on the course again. It seems like the Sony Open has been around forever but it only started in 1999.

The 2004 Sony Open featured one of the most significant debuts in golf. But it wasn’t a PGA Tour player that made headlines. It was a sweet faced, fourteen year old Michelle Wie that garnered all the attention as she made her debut on the PGA Tour.

She was the youngest woman ever to tee it up on the PGA Tour and went on to play in seven other tour events.

That week she missed making more history by missing the cut by just one shot.

Take a look at Michelle at the 1:45 minute mark.

And look here for a peek at fourteen year old Michelle with Hawaii’s golf Ambassador, Mark Rolfing as he talks to her about her future. She talks of remaining an amateur all the way through college. Well we all know how that turned out.

While her foray into the men’s game was not as successful as she had wished she has made her mark on the LPGA.

This I know for sure…. the game is better with both Mark and Michelle back on the course.

  1. Glad to see Wie playing better over the last few years. And I do not think she has peaked yet. Seems like the media was often harsh on her in the past, but when expectations are so high it is easy for them to cast doubts.
