Every time a player on the PGA Tour wins for the first time it is a special day. For Billy Hurley III today was really, really special.
This win at the Quicken Loans National took place in his backyard, having grown up just thirty some miles away. Playing at Congressional just outside of Washington D.C. and a short ride to Hurley’s college home, The Naval Academy he had tons of local support from friends and fans hoping to honor their military hero. And after a year where he lost his father, a former club pro turned sheriff deputy to a self-inflicted gunshot wound this win has to ease some of that pain he lived with over the past year.
He was near tears as he held his children and wife close during his green-side celebration and acknowledged it was a special place to earn his first win.”I couldn’t think of a better tournament for my first PGA Tour win,'” he said. ”I’m just thrilled to have gotten it done today.”
“It’s been a hard year. It’s been a really hard year, so it’s nice to have something go well.”
Yes, this Sunday went very well.
