Justin Thomas Takes Tournament of Champions

The first PGA Tournament of 2017 is in the books and Justin Thomas has another notch on his belt with his win at the SBS Tournament of Champions.

Thomas, just 23 is another of the young guns on tour that have taken over the PGA Tour. He held off the hottest player in the world, Hideki Matsuyama, who was shooting for his fourth straight world wide win. thomastrophy

This is his third win but just is his first win on America soil, as he claimed his two earlier wins at the ’15 and ’16 CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur.

Thomas started the final round with a two stroke lead over Matsuyama and stretched it to five shots for what looked to be a potential leisurely stroll over the hills of Kapaula. But golf is golf and it is anything but easy.

Thomas may have felt a little pressure as he hooked a 4-iron into the hazard on the par 5 fifteenth and stumbled to a double bogey. At that point Matsuyama had a putt to pull with in one shot of the lead. But he failed to drain it and gave Thomas a chance to settle down.

And he did just that with a pure approach to four feet on seventeen for a kick in birdie. He birdied the last for good measure to finish three shots clear of Matsuyama.

Thomas is an enigma on the tour: a 145 pound long driver. He averages over 300 yards with the big dog. How the heck does he do that? It is just amazing.
